Daniel is right where they updated pre WO2 motorcycles in the late fourties, Ariel WNG's got rearspringing and telescoop front.

In this case the crankcase has an edge on the driveside so it could connect to the gearbox.
Maybe they have casted a new crankcase or a whole new engine but why "inlet over exhaust" and dripfeed?, in that case the value of the altering is very low and i would bring it back to standard Gnome Rhone.
Lets follow Daniel's line, the G & R engine was lost, they had a 1914 ugly squire oil-in-crankcase stationairy engine, made a new crankcase with pump, a gearbox connection, a dripfeed tank, heavier springblades to save a 1920 motorcycle.
Better built a whole new motorcycle, so i am still with a handyman or did they do the same updating in the twenties in Italy? that would fit better.

I think the man who restored and built this a few years ago is reading this and is laughing his pants off.
