With more than the 400cc of the Sopwith it's is more of a mountaingear, there was a heavy Swiss Alp race in the twenties.

Until now i didn't find anything on the internet but if it's a racing engine it would be 500cc, the magneto position making it direct belt drive.
Maybe the driveside of the engine will give some clues.

Hi
the bike came with a plate nr. stating it was in use near Trento (very nice high mountain zone in Italy)
This explains eventual montain gear, but i have to check if the plate corresponds to the bike or if comes fm elsewhere
I don't feel the engine is apparently a competition model, appears so smoot..
Your efforts to identify it are very appreciated
Thankyou
Andrea

Now i have seen more photo's.
If the engine was specialy built for this frame than the cooling fins wooldn't need to be in line so it was for an other motorcycle or to drive a dinamo etc., the magneto drive deck is nice and smooth but the crankcase is rough and wide built as if supports are machined from the crankcase.
The engine number 148 could indicate a production in stead of one prototype.
The tank supports are to flimsy to be factory.
The valvesprings are not through the valvestems like ABC did.
So i am back to 1914-18 Zedel auxiliary engine.
