Concerning the starter.  Does the engine have a splinded shaft at the other end of the crank to the hand starter pulley? If so then that is likely where the starter is connected (The starter is primarily the generator yeah?).  So what I'm saying is that anything could be used as a starter but if you wanted to have a generator (that you also use as a starter) then see what comes up on eBay.  I bought an eclipse aviation one (24v) for my project. I have the Sunderland APU.  See photos. Br neil

Sorry. I looked at some earlier photos in this thread and I see that there is a 30v generator connected to the splined shaft. I see that there is a silver blanking plate. Have look behind it and see what you find.  My guessing is that it will work fine.  It needs 30v yeah?   See photo attached of the eclipse generator

Thanks that helps a lot, I’m no Sparkie!
I removed generator to make engine easier to turn over by hand but when I’m ready I can refit it, do you just use two 12 v batteries to start it?

Cool.  I see removing it made it easier to turn over (does the generator has a mechanical clutch?  The Sunderland APU has a clutch see photo)
yeah reinstalling the generator would be great, you could run light off it. It would make sense to do some research and get the right set up as a short circuit would be scary.  So solenoid, fuses.  Send over a photo of what's behind the blanking plate. Do continuity checks of all the cables and the body (earth).  This will help work out what the circuit should be.
photo of Sunderland APU clutch lever attached (although mine have not been run so I don't really know if it works).

I do not see any clutch assembly on the engine, will get a mate of mine (electrician) to figure out starting etc

So today I removed the oil filter assembly and pipes to oil pump, cleaned oil filter internals and then started to prime the oil lubrication System
i removed banjo bolt pipe to oil sump, spun it 90 deg then tightened up. This enabled me to fill this pipe to prime the oil pump by turning engine with the pull start assy.
i then filled the oil filter assy with fresh oil and fitted it back on to engine, connecting the lower oil feed pipe back on, this allowed me to pump oil into engine pipes and hopefully bearings!
I kept priming the upturned oil supply pipe ( I put a filler funnel on it via a short rubber hose) I bled pipe to pressure gauge and every pull I was getting 2-5 psi! Good start !
eventually the drive for the Genny popped out as pressure had built up behind it , this allowed me to see the bevel drive to the fan for first time!
exciting times.
just need to work out how to keep this drive coupling in the casing to stop oil pouring out!
either that or I will put the Genny back on.
once I am happy that all lubricated areas are getting a good supply of oil I will think about spinning her up with started motor / Genny with plugs out, then ……. Broom broom
