Hi I think the hour race and the record were a few weeks apart but it is definitely not the victory race my mistake.he has a speedo fitted in the victory race.there is no number on the machine and he is also wearing a watch so my guess is the hour record either June 12 which was cancelled due to rain or the week after when he broke the record class c

Hi managed to view the 2 links today both are very good sights spent most of the time looking at other things.
The hour race image is great never seen it before.
Emerson won the race at 64 miles 180 yards.Pope on a zenith was second at 45 miles 456 yards.Big margin.
Jack workhouse was his biggest rival but dropped out on lap 4
The one hour record was either 12 June or 1 week later the 17 June.the 12 th. was rained off and he broke the record on the 17 th. information from brooklands bikes in the twenties by peter hartley

I've added "The MotorCycle" article Keith was referring to, you can find it in the articles page.
Picture quality is quite poor. I would appreciate if somebody could provide better scans from the March 13th 1919 "The MotorCycle"

Thank you for posting the article from "The MotorCycle" - March 13th, 1919 which clearly shows the extending timing case which was used to drive an oil pump in an under crankcase oil tank. For the Sopwith version, it is interesting they dispensed with the oil pump and separate tank, relying on gravity and crankcase suction taking oil from a dual fuel /oil tank. I also noted in the recently posted materials on 'ABC Motorcycle in France' they mention 'including 5 1922 models with the oil pan under the engine', is this a reincarnation of this 1919 design?

It could well be a reincarnation of the 1919 design. G&N seems to have improved quite a few of Bradshaw's ideas.
I wonder if the original design ever worked. G&N had to add fins to cool the oil so there's a chance in 1919 there were cooling problems or maybe ABC just had to leave the solution aside to reduce costs.

In answer to the question Neil had about about the photograph, I asked Roger Bird, the Brooklands authority on such matters and his reply is 'Jack Emerson an his ABC on the starting line in front of the timekeepers box. Before the Great War (and just after) that box was at the Fork on the outside of the track adjacent to where the Vickers factory expanded'.
