Sopwith ABC Valve Timing: the only figures I have ever seen appeared in an article in Motor Cycling (August 17, 1921: page 423 I think),entitled How to obtain Super Speed from an ABC. The quality of my copy is poor, but the values given, it is claimed for a Standard Camshaft, are as follows:-
Inlet Open 5* before TDC
Inlet Close 45* after BDC
Exhaust Open 65* before BDC
Exhaust Close 5* after TDC
Valve overlap is thus very modest, and is symmetrical about TDC. That said,I think that the timimg is still quite sporty! No mention is made of the tappet clearances relevant to the above figures.

I am pleased to report we have completed the repairs to the ABC and it is back on show at Brooklands. It will be on 'light duties' for a few months around the museum to ensure all is well. It will be exhibited at the Farnborough Air Show in July and it is planned for use in the Shere Hill Climb in September.
Many thanks to those that have helped us, regards Ian

I am thinking that for Montlhery we must go to a little trouble to adorn the marquee supplied by Vincent at VRM. Perhaps some posters (reprints) that we could put up. And how about printing excerpts from articles that would be of interest or amusement to the visitors ?
I particularly like this phrase from the article that Giovanni posted :
" The machine will plunge all over the road for few yards, therefore keep your feet dangling ready to give a dig one side or the other while you fight with the machine to get it straight "

The rebuilt ABC completed the Shere Hill Climb this week. Unfortunately I do not any pictures of it blasting off the start line, just the one below of it waiting to be called up.
