Joe Beckett was a boxer, as was Frank Moran whose famous right hand punch he called his “Mary Ann”.
Such boxing references seemed common.at the time.
Some came from the Great War - The terrifying 15cm German artillery shell which produced a cloud of black smoke was called a “ Jack Jonson” by the Allies after the American boxer because of his powerful punch -and his colour.

The Shortest Day is in prospect, it's a gloomy time of the year. So here's a little story to generate a smile or two, I hope.
Mention of the dreaded Jack Johnson reminded me of similar perils for which the Tommies invented their own names.
Way back, I'd built a bike of very mixed provenance, and decided to ride it in one of the early Cheltenham Internationals. I filled in the (mostly correct) Manufacturer's Name in the appropriate box on the entry form, but was then confronted by a "Type or Model" box. I entered a rather light-hearted title, really expecting it to be rejected, and posted the form off.
In due course came the day of the event, and I scanned the Entry List to see who else was to be there. But when I got to my own name I read, Paul Button and the Whizz Bang Special!
