It enables a firm purchase to be made in the 12T pinion, while the face-ratchet on the other end of the shaft can be restrained with an open-ended spanner of jaw-width 1 3/16"
The screw-thread that holds these components together? BSF, of course! Diameter 1/2", right-handed. But probably very tight.
